Commodity stocks are supposed to move on price. Coal goes up, the miner goes up. Coal goes down, so does the miner.

Last quarter, one steelmaking-coal producer didn’t follow the script. The benchmark price for its coal, according to the company, averaged about 29% more than a year earlier. The average price per ton it actually received rose just 6%, from $130.01 to $137.82. Yet revenue jumped 71%, to $509.7 million. Adjusted EBITDA, a cash-earnings measure, nearly tripled, from $53.6 million to $156.9 million. Net income went from $5.6 million to $87.4 million.

Price didn’t do that. Tonnage did. The company shipped 3.65 million tons, up 65% in a year, and its cash cost per ton fell 9%.

The reason is a hole in the ground. Over the past few years this company spent about $1.03 billion building a new underground mine in Alabama, and the cost showed up in its cash flow for a long time. It generated negative free cash flow of about $90 million in 2024 and again in 2025, because capital spending ran $457 million and $320 million. The mine’s longwall, the machine that shears coal off the seam, started in October 2025, eight months ahead of schedule. Last quarter’s spending was $28.9 million, against $94.3 million a year earlier.

That is how a company goes from digging a mine to harvesting one. And the reaction?

The stock closed Wednesday at $89.98, about 19% below its 52-week high. In late August, its CEO sold 50,000 shares at $110, about $5.5 million. On the earnings call, management said the second half should be weaker than the first, with lower selling prices and less free cash flow, according to a call summary. It described a “lower range-bound market” for coal.

So there are two stories. In one, this is a commodity producer near the top of a price cycle, and the smart people are leaving. In the other, the expensive part is over, and the market is still valuing the company on its building years.

Both can’t be right. The way to tell them apart is to ask what the cash flow looks like when prices stop helping.

And this is a company whose latest report beat Wall Street’s profit estimate by 13%.

Last Friday, Delta Air Lines cut its profit forecast by nearly a quarter. The reason fits in one number: its fuel bill is about $6 billion higher this year. Jet fuel on the Gulf Coast hit $4.34 a gallon on October 8, roughly double where it stood a year ago.

Here is the part that doesn’t fit the story. The same report showed record revenue, up 16% on flat capacity, and Delta’s CEO said travelers are still booking in every cabin. Airlines are paying far more to fly, and passengers keep showing up anyway.

So the airlines are stuck. They would love to swap their thirstiest planes for newer ones, and they can’t. As of March, Airbus and Boeing together had more than 15,000 unfilled orders, roughly a decade of production at current delivery rates. Industry data puts the average passenger jet at about 15 years old, up from 13 before the pandemic.

Follow that chain and it leads somewhere less obvious than the airlines. If new planes can’t arrive and old planes can’t stop flying, someone has to keep the old ones airworthy. Every extra year in service means more parts, more component repairs and more heavy checks in hangars that are already scarce. That spending doesn’t depend on whether fuel is $2 or $4. The plane has to be fixed either way.

You would expect a company sitting in the middle of that to be having a good autumn. One is not. It sells new aircraft parts, repairs components, maintains whole airframes, and supports the U.S. military. Last quarter its sales rose 24%. Its new-parts distribution business grew 23% without any acquisitions. Management said it sees no slowdown in parts orders, and raised its full-year sales growth outlook to the low teens.

On the same day, it announced a deal to buy a majority stake in a business with an enterprise value of about $4 billion, which happens to be about the same as the whole company’s stock market value. The shares fell more than 7% the next session and kept sliding. They now sit about 35% below the August peak, and the slide actually began before the deal was announced.

So is the market looking at a broken business, or a good business that just made a very large bet? Those two stories lead to very different stock prices.

Trading volume ran at roughly ten times normal. Data sites flashed record lows. A stock that sat near $77 the day before changed hands around $12.

If you only looked at the chart, you would have assumed something terrible happened. Fraud, a failed trial, a lost customer.

Nothing like that happened. The company split in two.

Here is the part that makes the chart misleading. Every shareholder received one share of a brand-new company for each share they already owned. On the first day of trading, the old stock was worth about $12.56 and the new one about $67.46. Add them together and you get roughly $80, against a $77.65 close the day before. The value didn’t vanish. It moved into a second ticker.

That is the mechanical part, and it is not the interesting part. The interesting part is what happens to the stock that is left, because a spin-off creates a very specific kind of mispricing.

The new company is the shiny one. It got the famous brands, the growth story and a seat in the S&P 500, which forces index funds to buy it. The leftover company gets the opposite: it is bumped out of the S&P 500 into the smaller mid-cap index, so funds built around the S&P 500 have to sell. It also inherits the boring, hard-to-model, controversial parts of the old business. Holders who got it by accident often don’t want it and sell it for reasons that have nothing to do with its earnings.

So the question isn’t “why did it fall 84%?” That one has a boring answer. The question is: what is the leftover business actually worth, and what is the market so worried about that it is willing to hand it over at this price?

The worry has a name, and it arrived the same week. This past week, sixteen states and territories sued the company and its spun-off sibling in Indiana state court. Their claim is blunt. They allege the split was a way to move roughly $40 billion of valuable assets into the new company, leaving the old one holding long-term environmental liabilities tied to PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals. The company calls the suit “entirely without merit.”

Hold that thought, because the business on the other side of that lawsuit is more interesting than the headlines suggest. It is a global crop-protection company with about $7.8 billion in sales, a net cash balance sheet and a stock price that implies it is worth roughly five times its annual operating profit.

So which company is it, and is the discount the market is demanding too big, too small or about right?

For nine months, the market has been running one very simple trade. AI will write the code, answer the phones and process the insurance claims, so any company that makes money selling human hours to do those jobs is roadkill.

Indian IT stocks got hit in February. Call-center giants slid. In June, a Gartner warning about failed AI projects pushed the whole outsourcing complex lower again. Accenture, the biggest name in the group, was down roughly 30% for the year before this morning.

Then this morning Accenture reported record bookings of $84.5 billion for fiscal 2026, guided to 3–6% revenue growth next year, and the stock jumped more than 20%.

The number worth staring at is not the jump. It’s a sentence in how the company now reports. Accenture stopped breaking out “advanced AI” bookings after the first quarter, and management’s explanation was that AI work “is increasingly being incorporated into larger client projects rather than sold as a standalone service.”

Read that slowly. The fear was that AI would replace the project. The evidence is that AI is becoming part of the project.

That changes the question. If AI work is getting folded into big service contracts, the interesting part is no longer whether the services industry survives. It’s who gets paid for the least glamorous piece of the job: cleaning up messy data so a model can use it, and wiring AI into regulated workflows like claims, underwriting and payment audits, where a wrong answer has legal consequences.

Accenture is a $138 billion company growing in the low-to-mid single digits. It can’t be the cleanest way to play that shift. A smaller company with the same exposure and a much faster growth rate would be.

Here is what that company looks like on paper. More than 60% of its revenue now comes from data and AI-led work, and that slice grew 30% last quarter, the fourth straight quarter of acceleration. It has raised full-year guidance at each of its last two reports. It trades at roughly the same earnings multiple as Accenture does after today’s move. And in July it was sitting at a 2026 low, priced as exactly the kind of business AI was supposed to eat.

So which company is it?

This is where the story stops being about a headline and starts being about the numbers underneath it.

Much of the fuel that keeps Hawaii running depends on a single mooring buoy 1.7 miles off Barbers Point, according to Honolulu Civil Beat’s reporting this month. That buoy feeds the only refinery in the state. Whatever the refinery can’t make, the islands import, and one analysis found that 88% to 100% of those finished-fuel imports come from a single country: South Korea.

Hold that picture next to a different number. The diesel crack spread, the gap between what diesel sells for and what the crude inside it costs, has broken $100 a barrel. That is a record, and it happened while crude itself was moving sideways.

It isn’t supposed to work this way. Refining margins are meant to follow oil. Stillwater Associates, a refining consultancy, argues that diesel has decoupled from crude and is now priced by how much demand has to disappear to match the missing supply. The supply really is missing. U.S. distillate inventories sit roughly 12% to 16% below their five-year average, depending on the week and the source. American refineries are running at about 97% of capacity, with no headroom left. About a third of U.S. distillate output is being exported. Around 1.5 million barrels a day of global diesel supply, roughly 5% of world demand, is offline because of the Hormuz closure, Russian export bans and attacks on refineries. Retail diesel is above $6 a gallon.

A strange market for good news

None of this is landing in a friendly tape. The Fed raised rates on September 16, its first hike since 2023, and 16 of 19 officials expect at least one more this year. The 10-year Treasury yield is sitting near 5.24%. Consumer confidence just hit a 12-year low. In that environment, an industry whose earnings are actually arriving should be a magnet.

The biggest refiners already had their run: as of late July, Marathon Petroleum and Valero had nearly doubled this year and Phillips 66 was up two-thirds. The easy part of this trade is public.

The harder part shows up in how one of these companies was treated after it reported. Its latest quarter delivered $462 million of net income and $571 million of adjusted EBITDA, against $138 million a year earlier. The whole company is worth about $3.9 billion today, so one quarter of profit equals roughly 12% of its market value.

The stock fell 15.8% the next day, from $83.00 to $69.92.

Investors weren’t disputing the quarter. They were deciding it was a peak, and they may be right about part of it. Some of that record was timing: crude bought ahead of the spike and product sold after it, a net price-lag benefit of about $76.5 million in Hawaii alone. Management also said July’s margins ran below the second-quarter average and cautioned against extrapolating.

So the question isn’t whether the quarter was good. It’s what this business earns when “good” is less spectacular, and whether the price already assumes that answer. That depends on details a headline skips: what the company owes, what taxes it stops sheltering next year, what one regulatory ruling and one asset sale could add, and how much of its profit rides on a single point of failure.

One mid-cap refiner sits at the center of all of it, and its stock is priced as if the good news has an expiration date.

Par Pacific Holdings (NYSE: PARR).

Par Pacific operates four refineries with roughly 219,000 barrels a day of capacity, plus logistics assets and a retail network under brands like Hele and 76. They sit in Kapolei, Hawaii; Billings, Montana; Tacoma, Washington; and Newcastle, Wyoming. Each sells into an isolated regional market with its own price index, which is why the same crisis paid them very differently last quarter: the Hawaii index averaged $46.06 a barrel against $8.57 a year earlier, while Washington’s was $20.27.

Hawaii is the prize. The refinery’s adjusted gross margin was $57.00 a barrel, versus $10.18 a year ago. Par also supplies about half of the diesel the U.S. military uses in Hawaii and is its principal jet fuel supplier, per Civil Beat. That is a scarce, hard-to-replicate position, and it explains how a $3.9 billion company posts a $571 million EBITDA quarter.

A four-year-old private startup called Cyera is reportedly in talks to raise new funding at a $12 billion valuation. Sacra estimates Cyera’s annual recurring revenue at roughly $150 million. That works out to close to 80 times revenue — a number that would make even the giddiest 2021 SaaS multiple blush.

Nobody’s writing “AI infrastructure” headlines about this. The chips, the power plants, the data centers — that’s the story everyone already knows how to tell. This is the quieter layer underneath it: once a company plugs an AI agent or a Copilot into its email, its file servers, its cloud storage, something has to know exactly what sensitive data that agent can now touch, and stop it from wandering somewhere it shouldn’t. That job has a name — data security posture management, or DSPM — and in the last two years it’s gone from a niche compliance checkbox to one of the fastest-growing line items in enterprise security budgets.

Here’s the part that doesn’t add up cleanly. Enterprises adopting AI agents didn’t just create a problem for four-year-old startups to solve. They created it for whoever already had a decade of infrastructure mapping who can see what, inside nearly every major company’s Microsoft 365 tenant, Salesforce instance, and file server. That kind of institutional depth is hard to build from scratch, and expensive to buy your way past.

Private markets have apparently decided that depth is worth chasing at almost any price. Public markets, so far, have decided something very different about the company that already has it.

That gap — what venture capital is paying for the promise of this category versus what public investors are paying for a company already living inside it — is where this story gets interesting.

The Number Nobody’s Framing Correctly

The Pentagon’s FY2027 budget request asks for $52.8 billion for missile defense — a 32% jump from the year before. Buried inside it: funding for the Navy’s SM-3 IIA interceptor is up 727%. PAC-3 MSE, the Army’s workhorse interceptor, is up 590%. Separately, the broader missile procurement budget is proposed at $70.5 billion, up 188% from two years ago.

Those are extraordinary numbers for a line item that usually moves in single digits. The obvious read is that this is good news for defense stocks, full stop — more government spending, more revenue for the companies that build the hardware.

Except that’s not quite what people who study this for a living are saying. Becca Wasser, an economist at Bloomberg Economics, put it plainly: “Solid rocket motors and seekers continue to be really significant bottlenecks, and I’m not sure that there’s a dollar figure that can overcome those bottlenecks.” Carlton Haelig at the Center for a New American Security goes further, describing “an extreme delta between what the department expects on an annual basis and what industry is able to produce.”

Read that again. The Pentagon can write whatever check it wants. It cannot manufacture solid rocket motors, guidance seekers, or missile structures out of the check itself. Congress just found out the hard way that the munitions gap exposed by recent stockpile drawdowns — Tomahawks, PAC-3 interceptors — isn’t a funding gap. It’s a factory-floor gap.

That reframes the whole trade. The interesting question isn’t “who gets the budget increase.” Everyone with a ticker in the sector gets some of that. The interesting question is: who actually has the physical capacity to turn a bigger check into more hardware, right now, without a five-year plant-construction detour?

The Companies Everyone’s Already Bought

Say the words “defense stock” and most investors think of the primes — Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX. Reasonable instinct. Wrong layer. The primes assemble the finished missile. They don’t make the propulsion assembly, the interstage structure, or the payload deployment system inside it — those come from a much smaller universe of specialty manufacturers sitting one or two tiers down the supply chain, largely invisible to anyone who isn’t reading a 10-K.

That’s the layer where the actual bottleneck lives. And it’s the layer where one company has spent the last several years building exactly the kind of vertically integrated, concept-to-production manufacturing base the Pentagon is now scrambling to fund more of.

Here’s the part that should make you sit up: this company just posted its best quarter ever — record backlog, guidance raised, revenue up 58% — and its stock is sitting within a dollar of its 52-week low, down roughly 70% from where it traded eight months ago.

That’s not a typo, and it’s not the “great business nobody noticed” story you’d expect. This one got noticed plenty. It’s a business that got dramatically better all year while the stock got cheaper, and then, this month, a short-seller showed up with a specific reason to stay away. Whether that reason holds up is the question worth digging into.

Brent crude broke $105 a barrel today. WTI crossed $100. Both moves are happening for the same ugly reason: the conflict between the U.S. and Iran has escalated to the point where tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — the chokepoint that roughly a fifth of the world’s oil physically has to pass through — is getting disrupted in real time.

The stock market’s reaction has been almost textbook. The S&P 500 is down. The Russell 2000 is down more. Treasury yields just hit a three-year high because a hot inflation print, on top of an oil shock, has traders pricing something unusual: not a Fed rate cut, but a hike, with odds now sitting near 70% for next week’s meeting.

And in the middle of that risk-off tape, one group of stocks is doing the opposite of everything else. Tanker shipping companies have reportedly surged to their highest levels in a decade or more. It’s the kind of headline that makes for an obvious trade: chaos in the Gulf, fewer ships willing to make the run, day rates spike, tanker owners print money.

That trade is real. It’s also, at this point, not a secret. Analysts have been raising price targets on the big crude tanker names for weeks. CNBC has covered it. One of the largest crude tanker owners just got downgraded on valuation grounds — not because the story is wrong, but because everyone already knows it.

Here’s the more interesting question: what happens if you follow the same macro shock one layer deeper — past the ships that carry crude oil, to the ones that carry what’s left after it’s refined?

That’s a different business, with a different set of drivers, and — right now — a very different market reaction to identical fundamentals.

The Story Nobody’s Framing Correctly

Most of the tanker coverage this week is about crude — VLCCs and Suezmaxes hauling barrels out of the Gulf. That’s the visible half of the shipping story.

The less-discussed half is product tankers: ships that move gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel after it’s been refined. And product tankers have a structural tailwind that has nothing to do with Iran. Europe has been closing refineries for years — high energy costs, tightening fuel standards, aging plants that don’t pencil out to modernize. At the same time, new refining capacity has been coming online in the Middle East, North Africa, and the U.S. Gulf Coast. The result is a geography mismatch: fuel increasingly gets made in one place and burned in another, which means every barrel of refined product now travels farther, on average, than it did a decade ago. More distance per barrel means more demand for ships, independent of any single week’s headlines.

Layer today’s Hormuz disruption directly on top of that structural trend — refined-product cargoes are now also getting rerouted around a war zone, adding even more distance to already-lengthening voyages — and you get a business with both a cyclical catalyst and a structural one pointing the same direction at the same time.

The business that sits most directly at that intersection, and that the market has priced far more conservatively than the crude tanker names getting all the press, is one most retail investors have never looked at.

Here’s a pattern worth knowing before you read another headline about government drug pricing: when Washington forces a price cut, the market almost always treats it as pure bad news for the company on the other end of it. Lower price, lower revenue per unit, lower earnings. Sell first, ask questions later.

That reaction makes sense when the price cut is the whole story. It makes a lot less sense when the price was never really the constraint on the business — volume was.

For more than a year, the biggest bottleneck in the fastest-growing corner of American pharmaceuticals hasn’t been demand. It’s been access. A weekly injection that has to be refrigerated, self-administered, and paid for largely out of pocket or through spotty insurance coverage is a product that only reaches people determined enough, wealthy enough, or well-insured enough to push through the friction. Multiply that friction across tens of millions of eligible patients and you get a company posting historic growth off what is still, by its own admission, a small fraction of its addressable market.

So picture three things happening to that friction at almost the same time. The price comes down and gets anchored to a number the government negotiates directly. The product itself changes shape — from a needle you have to plan your week around to a pill you swallow like anything else in your medicine cabinet. And the cheaper, unregulated version of the drug that thousands of patients had been getting from compounding pharmacies instead of paying full price starts getting shut down by federal regulators.

Individually, each of those is a headline. A price cut. A drug approval. A regulatory crackdown on a gray-market alternative. Financial media covered all three separately over the past ten months, mostly through the lens of “is this good or bad for the stock.” Almost none of the coverage asked what happens when a company’s price, its delivery format, and its cheapest workaround all shift in the same direction inside a single fiscal year.

The macro setup here is bigger than one company. The U.S. obesity and metabolic-disease drug market is one of the largest new pools of prescription spending created in a generation, and the two companies that built it have spent the last two years locked in a genuine arms race — on efficacy, on manufacturing capacity, and now on drug delivery. The government, for its part, has been trying to find a middle path between “let the market decide” and the blunter instrument of the Inflation Reduction Act’s Medicare drug price negotiation program, which was already set to arrive at these same drugs on its own multi-year schedule regardless of what the industry wanted.

What actually happened in November 2025 was a negotiated deal: Medicare and Medicaid would get access to these drugs — including, notably, for obesity use, which Medicare had not broadly covered before — at a set monthly price, with a $50 Part D copay for patients starting in the middle of 2026. Read one way, that’s Washington strong-arming a price cut. Read another way, it’s a company agreeing to a lower price today, on a voluntary basis, specifically to get ahead of a mandatory, less favorable one that the law already had queued up. Those are very different stories, and the stock market initially leaned toward the first one.

But this is where it gets more interesting, because pricing was only the first domino.

The company sitting at the center of all three of these shifts, and the reason this is worth a closer look right now, is one most investors already own in some form, whether they know it or not.

The Quiet Half of the Oil Trade

There are two ways to make money when oil goes back to work.

The obvious one: buy the producers. When Brent sits near $95, they print cash, and everybody notices before you finish reading the headline.

The other way is slower and stranger. You buy the people who get paid whether the well works or not — the specialists who run the casing, test the well, and manage the pressure on someone else’s rig, for their own day rate, regardless of outcome.

One company in that business just had an unusual year. It bought a Norwegian technology firm. It moved its legal home out of the Netherlands, quietly removing the one thing that had kept it out of U.S. stock indexes. It’s been buying back its own stock. And it just reported an earnings miss — buried inside a press release that raised full-year guidance and told investors its profit margin would climb from 17% to above 26% by year-end.

The stock fell 5% the next day. It has since rallied 23% off that low — and every analyst covering it still has a price target at or below where it trades.

That’s not a crowded trade. That’s a trade nobody has bothered to update.

The Stock That Was Supposed to Stay Dead

Every bull market produces one company that becomes the morality tale. The name people bring up when they want to sound prudent. “Sure, AI is real, but remember what happened to...”

For the AI infrastructure trade, that company got its scarlet letter in February 2025.

The setup was almost cruel. This mid-sized chipmaker had spent two brutal years digging out from under a disastrous acquisition, a $1.2 billion deal that loaded the balance sheet with debt right as the business it bought fell apart. The stock had been to the brink. Then, salvation: a new product caught the AI wave. Its chips were going to sit inside the copper cables connecting Nvidia’s most advanced racks. The stock roughly quadrupled on the story.

And then, in one filing, the company admitted the marquee opportunity was shrinking. Rack designs had changed. The big customer’s architecture moved on. The stock lost about a third of its value in days, lawyers started circling, and the market filed the whole thing under “AI casualty.” Case closed.

Except somebody forgot to tell the business.

On Monday evening, that same company reported the best quarter in its history. Revenue up 33%. Data center revenue up 91%, to a record. Adjusted earnings up 73%. Then the part that made trading desks sit up straight: guidance for the current quarter of $410 million in revenue against a Wall Street consensus of $360 million, with earnings guided to $1.05 a share against a consensus of $0.73.

Read those numbers again. Companies beat consensus by pennies. This management team just told the Street its earnings estimate for the quarter already in progress was too low by 44%.

The stock jumped 10% yesterday on ten million shares, its heaviest accumulation day in months. Five analysts raised their targets within a day. One firm lifted its target from $225 to $300 this morning. Another has gone from $102 to $220 in the span of two weeks.

And yet, even after all that, the stock still sits 21% below the high it touched in late June. The market is acting like it hasn’t fully decided whether it’s allowed to believe this story again.

That hesitation is the opportunity.

But here’s where it gets interesting, because the quarter itself is the least important part. What actually changed is the structure of the entire company, and the market is only pricing the quarter.

Every conversation about AI eventually runs into the same wall: power.

You’ve heard the version everyone repeats. Data centers need electricity. The grid can’t keep up. Utilities are spending record amounts. Transformers have a two-and-a-half-year lead time. So investors pile into the obvious names, the transformer makers, the switchgear companies, the electrical contractors, and pay thirty or forty times earnings for the privilege.

Here’s the part that gets skipped.

Before any of that electricity reaches a server, it has to travel. Down transmission lines. Through substations. Across thousands of miles of conductor strung between poles and towers. And every single foot of that wire has to be gripped, spliced, anchored, protected from vibration, and held in place by physical hardware.

That hardware is not glamorous. It’s rods, clamps, dead-ends, splices, and closures. Small steel and aluminum parts. Nobody writes think pieces about them. But federal data shows more than 7,000 circuit miles of new and upgraded transmission lines entered service in a single recent year, and the vast majority of it wasn’t the marquee ultra-high-voltage stuff. It was ordinary line miles. Lots and lots of them.

Somebody makes the hardware for all of it.

That somebody is a company founded in 1947, in Cleveland, by an engineer who solved a problem nobody else had bothered to solve. Its US sales just grew 32 percent in a single quarter. Its earnings per share nearly doubled. And the stock recorded its largest one-day move on record, up roughly 30 percent, the morning after it reported.

Most investors have never heard the name. There’s a structural reason for that, and it is the entire opportunity.

But here’s where it gets strange.

This company doesn’t hold an earnings call. It doesn’t issue guidance. It doesn’t tell you its quarterly backlog. As far as I can tell, exactly one brokerage firm on Earth publishes a rating on it, and that firm has changed its mind three times in five months.

Which means there is no consensus estimate. No revision cycle. No sell-side chorus slowly repricing the story over six months.

There is only the press release, dropped into the void once a quarter.

There is a specific kind of setup that professional investors hunt for and almost nobody else notices.

What they’re looking for isn’t a turnaround trade or a bankruptcy fire sale, but something more subtle and more reliable: a company whose numbers are about to get worse, in a very specific way.
